Touch sensitive 3D printing
« on: September 26, 2015, 05:58:09 AM »
I am planning to do some experiments with touch sensing and while reading about capacitive touch screens I thought that it might be possible to make your 3D prints touch sensitive. Please note I do not have a 3D printer so this is just theoretical.

I mentioned this in the SB and birdmun gave me this link: http://hackaday.com/2015/09/24/buttons-sliders-and-touchpads-all-3d-printed-with-printput/
He also gave me this link: http://gajitz.com/the-mighty-pencil-diy-paper-touch-pad-gets-great-marks/

Perhaps next time someone prints a BoB they can make him ticklish but with a fondness for scalp massage?

In the meantime I am going to be playing with the IO pins on my Spider controller (Arduino Mega 2560 equivalent) to see what can be done just with code and wires. The Arduino inputs are very sensitive when in open circuit mode.

Atmel states in  the datasheet of the AVR ATmega micro controller that they support capacitive touch sensing. They have made a library for that purpose, Qtouch. http://www.atmel.com/tools/QTOUCHLIBRARY.aspx  Might be worth looking in to :)

The Atmel QTouch library uses software only for AVR processors.  Well, almost.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Frits made a post about vacuum molding using a vacuum cleaner, plastic plates and a hair dryer.
Recently I was thinking that a capacitive touch sensor could be drawn using conductive ink onto a plastic plate.

Using more plastic plates heated at the same time would allow multiple layers to be molded simultaneously with conductive circuits drawn between each layer.
