Automobile drag coefficient
« on: June 21, 2016, 01:25:27 AM »
I was talking with bdk about a side project that I've been messing with. I wasn't sure how to write it up at this time. So instead of going into great details which would not apply to most of the readers. I'm posting this link and you guys can do with it as you wish. Because I've not gotten far enough into my projects goals to share enough to claim it a success. But I will leave this with a teaser that there are note worthy mile per gallon/liter gains to be made for little cash from modifying the aerodynamics of your car!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile_drag_coefficient

EDIT

So I've been tracking my mileage from a few of these mods and I've gotta gloat a little bit. After adjusting the nut behind the wheel, these aero mods really work. I'm more than 70% over the EPA mileage rating for my vehicle! I'll do a write up once I get a bit farther along. Amazing stuff thus far....

To add a little more info to this topic. Real time data is the ticket to getting the most out of whatever you drive. I've been playing with a couple different gauges. For most of you guys the Mpguino is your best option. LINK But others are available like the Ultra Gauge or Scan Gauge. You can search for those online as they are all about the same.

In reply to my above post. I achieved 75% over the EPA rating for my vehicle's MPG by doing aerodynamic mods. The specifics will vary depending on your vehicle, so it does little to share the exact details of my build. But the point for you the reader to take away from this is: These mods do work when you do A.B.A. testing on your vehicle to prove their gains or failures. I only accepted any aero mod change as a MPG gain when it showed positive results over numerous tanks of gas. (minimum 10 tanks) After a years worth of trial and error the results speak for themselves. The total cost in parts was $400 USD for a 75% gain in fuel economy. Hours spent = too many to count!

Modifications done:

LRR tires
light weight steel rims
chin spoiler
ground effects
front and rear spats
bumper filler panels
Items in bold were made from lawn edging plastic.
roof rack removal
moon hub caps
reusable air filter drawing warm air from the engine compartment
synthetic oils
reprogrammed computer

Bump to add a link. There's good info on this link with pictures!
