What adapter do i need to attach 2WD gearbox to robot car?
« on: January 25, 2016, 06:55:49 PM »
Hey everyone,

Im trying to find a way to attach a 2WD gearbox to a robot car chassis, (which is just an aluminum box). Here's an example:

The problems i am facing are this...

The gearboxes have some type of cup as the output, where a dogbone would fit into. I need couple its output shaft directly to RC hex wheels, or even set screw hubs like available on servocity. Or even if i cant do that, I would need to convert this cup to an axle that has a flat side, then i use widely available shaft adapters (with a grub screw) and secure it to the shaft, and then add an RC wheel to the end. It looks like i might be able to take off that dogbone-cup. if so, i'm left with a flat axle with a hole that goes straight through. perhaps i can use this to put a shaft to hex coupler on? instead of using the coupler's grub screw to clamp down on a flat shaft, i'd have to get a longer grub screw and go all the way through.

The second problem is...how do i bolt this 2WD transmission to the robot chassis?

These types of transmisisons are designed for specific rc vehicles. Are there such things as generic transmissions that are easier to bolt on? My original plan was to buy 2 identical RCs and cut them in half, and then use the entire rear assembly's in my project. But this is a big waste, which has led me to posting this question.

Thanks in advance for any insights that can be provided!

I realize this question is dated, but, I thought I would chime in anyway. The gearbox you show has to have some kind of mounting points or you should be able to look at how it would be mounted in its original configuration. The other point is that the gearbox you show seems to be meant for an independent rear end, so, it has/had "dog bones" that drove the rear tires and the wheel adapters would have a mirror of what you show on the output of the gearbox.
