From .stl to laser cutter
« on: October 29, 2015, 11:57:07 AM »
Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone

I am currently putting together a small prototyping workstation using a Raspberry Pi, a 5" screen and an Arduino Mega.
Jinx ( http://www.robotrebels.org/index.php?action=profile;u=16 ) has been kind enough to design an enclosure for my idea, and it is bloody marvellous!

I have spoken to a gentleman on campus here at the College I work at, and have negotiated some free use of the laser cutter - good times!
All i need is to import the .stl files Jinx has kindly provided into an Adobe Illustrator template.

Can anyone suggest the best way to make this happen?

Thanks!

Does anyone use OpenSCAD? Apparently stls can be magixally crafted into 2D formats that would be usable for importing into Illustrator!

I'm not very good at openscad but if jinx can export the file as another format through sketchup (dxf or dwg) then I would be able to slice it into 2D for you easily with AutoCAD.

went looking at sketchup make  seeing if I could get either dxf or dwg out,  not a chance in hell without going pro or paying for a third party plugin.
so am exploring openscad to abstract the dxf from stl. http://gilesbathgate.com/2010/06/23/extracting-2d-mendel-outlines-using-openscad/
