Cheap Ebay Stepper Motors
« on: October 13, 2015, 11:39:51 AM »
These 5V steppers come with a ULN2003 driver board are under $2 and all over Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5V-Mini-Stepper-Motor-28BYJ-48-Drive-Simple-Test-Board-Module-ULN2003-5Line-/171163955680

IMO they are OK for learning about steppers, but not useful in projects. They are slow, not much torque, their tiny gears strip easily, they maddeningly skip steps, and (worst of all) the internal gears use prime numbers and gear ratios that make it impossible to get exactly 360 degrees! And they consume 4 I/O lines and gobs of power, God forbid you forget and leave a coil energized, sucking lots of current and overheating. Nonetheless they are cheap and everyone already has one so I put together these demos.

Good info at http://42bots.com/tutorials/28byj-48-stepper-motor-with-uln2003-driver-and-arduino-uno/

Ha, yeah I bought a handful of them thinking they would be cool... very slow, very weak but did learn a bit. I used one to build our son a "watch winder" for his old motion winding watch he had. Seems to work for that - lol.
The past is done, the future is not here, live today...
