ICStation.com Dispaly Module For Battery Capacity Display
« on: November 07, 2016, 04:49:26 AM »
"4 Colors Electricity Quantity Dispaly Module For Battery Capacity Display Electricity Meter "

It's a fuel gauge for measuring the battery voltage on sale at IC station http://www.icstation.com/colors-electricity-quantity-dispaly-module-battery-capacity-display-electricity-meter-p-9748.html and  thanks to  IC generosity I get to review it  for you Rebels...

                                                snatched from the data sheet
Basically it's a pre populated breakout board for the LM3914 similarly to the diagram above, in as compact design the chip will allow laid out on a RED double sided PCB. " values of the resistor are unknown " too small to read", all control pins are brought out to the side of the board so if a rebel felt inclined to tinker with the values of the resistors  'easy access to them.
Where the pins come through the board are cut clean with components parts soldered cleanly "no solder blobs here.

mode of operation:  Its possible to select either Bar or Dot mode by default it comes with bar. If you break the link between A/P pads leaves pin 9 floating and then the chip is in DOT Mode

I opted to break the link and add the jumper for either option  just as easy to solder the two points or add a switch. though be warned those pads are small and close together

the luminosity of the LED Bar graph display Led has a rather warm glow to it with segments clearly discernible from one another even in a well lit room, sure beats that single red led as an on state.

ease of use! take some freshly charged battery and simply attach the power leads and turn the pot clockwise till the blue led appears your done!.

conclusion:
MY one bug bear is they soldered the LM3914 directly to the board and feel duty bound to point out its almost a crime to the tinkerers and there love of breadboards, but  it helps maintain the compactness of this module 'so I forgive them.
That said this neat little module comes as is and ready to install into anyone of our projects up to 24V with the minimum of fuss and space, either on our boards  using a couple of standoff or bots chassis. Its also a useful in or mounted on a flight box for those drone flyers to quickly check the state of those battery banks.
I've added a model of the module and a case in the model section   http://www.robotrebels.org/index.php?topic=612.0

Nice, I should pick up a few. I saw a pic of one somewhere recently but didn't realize the chip used.

I can't believe the old LM3914 / 3915 chips are still around. I built a stereo "audio meter" for my 1967 Cougar using a 3915 (log version) way back in the late 1970's. Likely still in a box somewhere around here.  ???

Thanks Jinx!

hi proto
am trying tio figure something out
I want to set the lower limit for a lipo " and just don't know or if it can be done!"

but looking at diagram pin 4 RLO has a 33k resistor could I replace that with a Pot and adjust the lower limits,
