Logicoma-kun
« on: June 26, 2016, 09:27:39 AM »
A model of the "logicoma" mini-tank from the Ghost in the Shell: Arsie series. I've been working on this on and off for some time already. Most of the mechanical parts are laser-cut from clear acrylic (the tank is supposed to be in the "optical camouflage" mode). I'm using cheap 9g servos for the legs, and continuous rotation servos for the wheels. The robot will be able to both walk and drive.

There are some early tests of the walking and driving:

I'm writing about this project, because I have recently resurrected it, and started working on its brains. Initially I planned to use the WiPy board for this, but it turned out it's not very well suited for it and not very well supported. So I turned to the ESP8266 module, and the recently released Micropython port for it. Since that module only has a few pins -- not enough to drive all the servos -- I used a Pro Mini clone programmed as an I²C slave to control up to 18 servos at once.

The board is a bit bigger than what I had there before, so I had to cut some corners, but it finally fit:

Both the Pro Mini and the ESP8266 are now flashed, so I can move each of the servos individually from a python console in a web browser. Next I will need to write some python code to make the control a little bit more convenient.

I still need to program it to move properly, but here's a video of an early prototype:

Today I worked a little bit more on it, and made the eye socket out of hot-shaped acrylic:

This is wonderful man.
I love the marriage of the ESP8266 with the arduino operating at the slave.
