Free tool for converting 3D models
« on: January 04, 2017, 11:07:01 PM »
I didn't see this anywhere else yet so thought I'd throw it out there. Throw me out if I duped this.

Sometimes you need/want or just think you have to convert a 3D model file to another format.

For me the main issue was not the online NetFabb tool was taken over by Autodesk and now only outputs a .3MF file instead of an STL like it used to do. Might be a way around that but I've never found it and my fav low tech STL editor, TinkerCAD.com only takes STL, OBJ, of SVG files for the import.

So I searched around a bit some time ago and ran across this:
http://www.nchsoftware.com/3dconverter/index.html

I can then convert that 3MF to an STL and go on my happy (usually at least) way.

NCH has a lot of handy tools and I've used their paid version graphic and video format converter at work for a long time. The 3D Spin converter appears to be free and works like a charm for me at least. It can do multiple files, a folder full, give a preview of the parts, can make some adjustments to the file and outputs various types of formats. They have a mesh editor as well but I've never tried it.

I do use their VideoPad video editor and paid for it and have not complains so far.

Just in case it's needed by someone and your mileage will vary but 3D Spin may get you converted.

I like it  few model site i visit that uses 3ds format. I use netfabb mostly but that become rather PITA to get at since autodesk gobbled it, but there still a free version "basic" worth having  as it fixes models as well https://www.netfabb.com/ bit of hoop jumping to get it  download the free trial  acess to all features after 30 day it reverts to basic  but still a very useful tool.

if you not in the mood for theirs hoops http://en.freedownloadmanager.org/Windows-PC/netfabb-Studio-Basic.html
