Raspberry PI Zero NES Console
« on: November 20, 2016, 02:53:46 PM »
After seeing a similar project online I realized I finally found a good use for my pi zero that was collecting dust. I saw the new NES mini that is hitting stores and really wanted something similar, but with more/other games. I dug through a box of things from my childhood and found this old copy of Excitebike. Score!

The screws holding it together were security screws which I did not have a driver for, so I got creative. I took an old toothbrush, cut off the head and with my pocket knife, whittled it down so it fit in the screw hole. Then I torched the tooth with a lighter and once it was melted and soft, jammed it into the screw hole and held it in place until it had solidified around the screw head. It worked great and allowed me to remove the screws without the special driver.

On eBay I ordered a HDMI adapter and some NES usb controllers along with a little usb hub. The usb hub also had a female usb micro port which I used to route power to the pi. I used an xacto knife and some small files to create openings to mount the usb, HDMI and power ports into. Also I added a led wired to the pi's onboard led so I could see the activity on boot. I used super glue to hold everything in place.

I used an old pi b+ to get the RetroPie image all set up just because it was easier that way. It all worked out great and now my kids get to play the classics like Mario bros., Rampart, and The legend of Zelda along with pretty much every other nes game known to man. And who am I kidding? This project was for me too, I really enjoy having a NES back in my life again!

Thanks Baj. I certainly put all the work into it for cool factor and 'just because'. It would been so much easier to use a Pi 3 in a regular case instead, but where's the fun in that.
