Links / syncthing - true p2p directory sync
« Last post by mogul on Today at 03:21:49 PM »
Recently I discovered syncthing - a p2p directory sync. You find it over here

Syncthing is true peer-to-peer, data never gets stored on central server out of your control.  See it as Dropbox, but without the servers. The peer machines are the servers! They form the network. (if you let them)

Basically all it does is to keep a directory synchronized between two or more machines, save a file one peer, read it moments later on a different peer. A peer can have multiple directories, shared with different peers, one for family photo album, an other for files shared between work and home and so on.

In syncthing use the term Device which actually means user@host. So every one of my machines, 7 so far, I have installed syncthing on my user account, most linux and then a few windows ones too.

Devices are known my their public key known as their Device ID. One of mine looks like SDVXIU4-UFW7ZAK-CEWOLS4-ETX6KFX-6AHZDJC-Z36AJRD-G2PQIDM-FWUVXQ6

After two Devices are setup, you introduce them to each other. To do so you need some means of transferring the 64 char string from one device to the other. Mail, USB stick, chat, voice, QR code... use what you can make work

When the two devices know each other they can share a folder. Start by making a folder on one device and then select who you want to share it with.

You can easily share a folder with multiple devices, and they can then again share directly between them and a mesh start to form.

One interesting, but also a little dangerous, thing is the introducer. When Devices gets connected, they can be made introducers. That make them introduce other devices they know already. That way the mesh spreads easier, but also can make a giant mess if one is not careful with which device goes where.

Yeah you are right, screw them.... I'll just pay for the kits myself. I was blind sided by the whole thing when I got the email being that the account is a charity and all.
I can see them dumping regular users. But I never saw them dumping schools, church groups, charities, etc. What a bad PR event this will be on google.

First photobucket, now youtube. Who's next to flush their service down the pooper?

Meantime I've 25 Bob clones to build!   :o

been reading this about youtube, to be honest my view is stop making vid for youtube or refuse to have ad's posted on vid, " you need any army to reach there set targets " but once the ad man start seeing there views go down google will change, the little guy got fked over by the changes in terms which we have little choice but to except from the sly grubby gits.
just think once the makers stop sharing vids on youtube it be nothing but a branding freak show.

"PS
If we don't hit the thresh hold then I will just pay for the kits myself. But it sucks to lose the $70 that is in there.

Imagine there gonna be mass lawsuit on the way, lot of folks in that positions you tried those go fund me site thingies??? I've sooner drop you $5 than waste time with the callous shifty dealing of youtube.

Howdy,
Youtube just dropped a bomb that unless you have 1000 subscribers and hours of viewed content every month, they are now dropping you from the monetization program in February. For most of you this means nothing. For the charity that I run in my free time, its a small funding source that is now gone. And to think this all supposedly came from youtube not filtering ISIS video's which lost them significant ad revenue.

That sounds about right. I built TED (http://www.protowrxs.com/Robotics/TED/) in January 2013 and BoB followed right behind that during the hey day of LMR.

I have a shelf of projects still not completed since then still too.  :(

Wow, can't believe that would have made it out the door like that but I'd guess nobody thought to test through a battery cycle.

I have a slightly different story in that my home automation systems opens and closes my garage door having a digital 5v input for sensor and a relay/digital out to control on a VERY old TC+ controller. A few years ago we were away on vacation out of state and I get a text at 11pm saying "garage door opened". WTF - thought someone was breaking in so I checked cameras and sure enough the door is open. Told it to remotely close via the web and watched it close right up, didn't see anyone in the cameras so wrote it off as a fluke.

Next night same thing all over again. Ended up the input sensor 5v power supply was flaky and when it would drop out the system thought the door was OPEN at 11pm, the time I have the system check to see if we forgot to close it, so it will close it automatically. I couldn't remote into my system back then so I had the house watcher just unplug the garage opener until we got back home.

Needless to say I changed the configuration to "fail safe / closed" so that wouldn't happen again if low sensor power but thank goodness for the text notifications or I would not have had a clue the door was open all night long or at lest until someone checked the house.

Recently I had another fun time using fake WeMo switches on ESP8266 end points for controlling lights and testing sending a voice control back through a fake one for garage door operations. After installing the Alexa app on an old Android tablet the whole group of WeMo emulators would cycle off and back on, which at that time also opened and closed the garage door.

Fun fun in the DIY dorky world I have built.

Cool! I know I have one or more of those stuffed away in a box somewhere. Even bought the serial converter chip to drive it but I have no clue where I stuff it.
