Second Printer -- AliExpress kit?
« on: May 13, 2017, 02:50:50 PM »
I'm looking to buy a second printer.  I'm trying to decide between getting a second Kossel Mini or an Prusa i3.  I'm looking to spend between $200 and 600.  Anyone have a recommendation? Kit, no kit? AliExpress or a professional kit?

if you opt for an i3 get a metal frame.

I would not recommend a kit from China. My experience is that over time you will replace halve of the parts with better quality ones. Much better to source all the parts separately from Aliexpress / local shops. It will be more expensive and take a lot more time to built but you will  have a much better printer.
I have a P3steel (Prusai3 with steel chassis), super easy to built and setup. It's a very strong/stable platform. I bought the chassis from a shop in the EU. Most of the electronics and various small parts I sourced from China. For the hotend I wanted reliable quality parts so I got a genuine E3D v6 hotend. I now also have a genuine E3D titan extruder. It's a super reliable fast printer.

Jinx and Badji, thank you both for the information.  I think I'm going to go with a cartesian printer--as I'd like to see what the grass is like on the other side.

@Jinx, dear lord! That'd be huge!  I could print life sized Mario busts for target practice.  Are there any special concerns when extending the build that large? High-end steppers maybe?  And maybe when I said

I think I'm going to go with the P3Steel.  I already have these parts

1. ATX PSU
2. NEMA 17 x 2

@Badji, are there any special parts which are needed for the P3Steel, or should I buy parts as if building a normal Prusa i3?

I'm thinking of buying this chassis:

http://orballoprinting.com/en/frame/8-prusa-i3-steel-frame-p3steel.html

And eBay / Ali sourcing the rest of the parts.  Just want to make sure I don't botch it.

@Jinx, do you think a 32-bit controller is worth it?  Parts I'd like to splurge on match Badji's taste.  I'd like genuine E3 extruder and hotend.

http://e3d-online.com/v6-1.75mm-Universal

But I'm interested in a 32-bit controller.

What are your thoughts?  Also, what's your experience with Aliexpress?

yea it consumes more plastic!!.
though dont go using 8mm smooth bars over 400mm on the gantry "they slope in the middle  :o
we waiting on oss for a definitive answer on big he's building a Red monster with a 400mm volume area.

@Jinx, haha.

Ok, with that, I'm going to order the P3Steel and start sourcing parts.  Thanks for the help!

Ladvien, no special parts needed for the P3steel. I do recommend using lead screws on the Z. I think most P3steels these days use them, I'm really happy with mine.
I had one mayor issue with my printer. After setting up mine I started printing faster and faster and the noise was unbearable. I could hear my printer on the other end of the house. It's the downside of a stiff steel chassis. But I found an easy solution for it. I replaced the cheap Chinese LM8UU bearings on the X/Y axis with Igus Drylin bearings. Not cheap but amazing how quiet it is now :) Not everyone is happy with them though, lots of people complain that they have to much slack. I bought my smooth rods from a local shop, they are good quality and the Igus bearings fit perfectly.

@Badji, thanks for the heads up. I ordered from Orbella yesterday.  I splurged for the Ignus bearings. So I'm glad to know that was the right call.

I ordered the XL version, so the plate should be 200x300mm.

I've ordered a Titan Extruder and Hotend from E3D. I've bought a smoothie clone from ebay. And I've been curious about the BL Touch, so I ordered one as well.

Total is $550, so not too far over me budget. And 150 less than the BOM for my Kossel Mini.

BTW, a couple of months ago I converted mine to smoothieware. I replaced the Arduino Mega with a ReARM board from Panacutt http://www.panucatt.com/Re_ARM_for_RAMPS_p/ra1768.htm

It's easier to setup then Marlin and works better for me. I use DRV8825 drivers (32 microsteps) and have a graphic lcd. Marlin can't keep up with this when printing at +50mm/sec or so. I sometimes got small blobs and other little artifacts on my prints. I didn't know what caused it. Always suspected it to be Marlin ... Replaced the Arduino Mega and suddenly my prints are much cleaner.

I've printed lots of big simple things: pots, vases ... I can print them really fast using a 0.6mm nozzle. I whip out a 170mm high vase in 2 hours or so (0.4mm layer height and using the spiralise feature in Cura). It's really worth getting a big nozzle if you want to print such parts. I switch nozzles all the time, takes me less then 5 mins. A handy feature of the E3D v6.
