That's really interesting. So it seems that the majority of the development and programming was done by someone else, then the professors and hardware guys saw the potential for it to be a global phenomena and launched that almost in it's entirety as something different and attempting to play down the origins. That would upset me a bit too!! I'm surprise at how casual the tone of the article is. I would be fuming.
That said, almost all my projects involve a cloned arduino at some stage and I'm sure arduino is partly responsible for the explosion in the maker community. Having the platform out there and open source has given the world a lot, so I can't exactly slam the guys for getting it out there. Just a shame they hadn't credited it properly.

i wouldn't see it as "clones" Dan when its opensource. " there something being very twisted with opensource currently  its moving away from sharing to make at home to where they becoming the  next million $ products becoming bespoke kits, buy from here attitudes or you supporting cloners!! seeing it Reprap. where they share files that near impossible to do at home, opensource been thrown around like a badge of honour! for some.
but whats happening with arduino just sad with the core team grabbing millions, and the separation for copy rights holder. while the  people like us that used the arduino's in our projects made it successful which they're are willing  to share and got nothing but the glory and fame.
but splitting arduino into two with genuino one serves the east while the other in the west just sad days are coming.
