CAD learning
« on: April 25, 2017, 02:14:42 PM »
I am an absolute beginner at the field of CAD. Never needed it in my whole life, but now with the 3D printer...
This thread to gather a few learning sites.

What software do you plan to use ? Solidworks, Catia, Topsolid ?
On my side, to learn new features on Solidworks, I watched tutorials on Youtube.
It was very useful to understand the "surface" tool as well as tubular assembly, welding, sheet metal work.

Check here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN1Ub864wks&list=PLkMYhICFMsGajeARsY7N1t1jhbtMb1poL

Hope it help

Quite expensive:
"SOLIDWORKS Premium   9.950 €"
https://www.solidline.de/daten-und-fakten/preise.html ]
and it looks like you have to pay every year.

Are you using a cheaper version?

I'm also a big fan of Blender, but I can't use it with my latest laptop: the screen is such a high resolution that the text is too small for me to read!

I have to go into the options and fix this. The trouble is doing this while my eyes are only a couple inches from the screen. :(

It is fine on my main computers with a large monitor.

I have used blender quite a lot in the past, it's great for many things after you climb the learning curve. It does have one big issue though being a mesh based editor: if your mesh needs a change you are going to have to push vertexes around :/

Past year I've switched to FreeCAD which is volume based and fully parametric, a lot better for the kind of work we do.

That being said watch out for the wolves, both programs have bugs so save often:)
