Say hello to 3Dimsen!

"Dimsen" is danish and translates roughly to "The Gizmo". Anne quickly named the thing "3Dimsen"

Some years ago I built moglusa , a true repstrap build. Everything was handmade, not a single printed or machined part. That said, the printer wasn't really that reliable, lots of failed prints. During my summer holidays I gave it an overhaul, but while becoming better I was still not satisfied with it.

So I started looking for a new design to build. I wanted something where the printbed did not move on the X or Y axis. Some of the cube designs was looking promising. Bill of material began to materialize, long and expensive, several hundreds dollars. While sifting through offers on ali and ebay I stumbled across a rather large cube printer kit, affordable too, cheaper than my not yet finished  BOM.

Approx $320 in total with shipping:

Since money is a limit resource here it wasn't difficult to ditch the true DIY project and order the complete kit instead. The seller even had an option to ship it from Germany, means fast delivery and no import customs.

11 days later the box arrived in good shape.

The next week or so, Anne and I assembled the kit. Jup thats correct we did it together. Everything went smooth, the manual wasn't first class but good enough to understand. Were only outright foolish a few times, but we improvised and the printer was built.

Being rather big it wouldn't fit on a table in our small home, so I made a stand for it, two IKEA LACK tables put together, a wheeled base underneath.

Now with an extra shelf, moglusa got a new home too. More on moglusa at the bottom of this post.

The completed build had some shortcomings:
  • Wobbly frame
  • Under powered PSU and MOSFETs
  • No light
  • No remote control
  • No power switch
So we modified the build right after the first benchy had left the bed.
  • bolted pieces of plywood to the frame where possible
  • added another PSU had let the shipped one drive the heatbed directly with a Solid State Relay on the high voltage side to control the temperature
  • added some LED strips, serve as pilot light as well
  • added a RasPI with octoprint, and a webcam too
  • added a power switch
After this the machine looks like this.

There is still some things needed to be fixed
  • wires needs to be tidied somehow
  • wooden panels need some paint

As promised a little update on moglusa as well.

Update 2017-10-08
Added an inductive bed sensor. This, together with some Marlin configuration, enables automatic bed leveling.

Had to rearrange fans to make room for the sensor, and while doing so I added a small wind shield to stop some of the airflow hitting the hotend.

HELLO 3Dimsen!

Hi to you too moglusa!

I see you managed to find a way to include your signature ice cream sticks on 3Dimsen :p

Also, you might want to get a duct for the (print) cooling fan because as it is now it seems that the airflow will go right the extruder heating element

All in all \o/

Nice machine :) Deity is right, best design/print a nice fan duct to direct the fan on to the part. I also always wrap my heater block with kapton tape. Helps keep the temperature more stable.
